Maria Santos Alcantara creates functional pewter art.
Using a combination of enamels, veneers, semi-precious stones and glass she creates mirrors, boxes, photo frames and decorative panels. No two pieces are exactly alike as no casting or pressing is involved. Each piece is worked individually from Maria's original designs. The Pewter and Silver foil is a relatively new innovation and its malleability enables quite intricate repousse and chase techniques to be used.
Much of Maria's inspiration comes from the natural world and the flexibility of the pewter enables her to recreate the beauty of nature in every small detail.
Her decoration is applied to Thuya Wood or Elm boxes.
Pewter has an enduring quality and since it does not oxidize it requires no other care than the occasional dust!
